‘Goldilocks loves her gold locks & dadi’ by AminaB

Goldilocks loves her gold locks
Gold spoon
& she gets all the commissions she wants

They tell us we’re not good enough
Maybe if u took up less space
We’d have room to take up

Forget your wokeness
Follow consciousness
Think before u speak
Intention is key
Stop talking on top of me
Stealing our pens
Writing our stories

Nonbelievers say they believe
Follow the poetry
Then you will see
There’s something bigger

It’s already written
Don’t forget you were once a clay, pot, now we pretend
To act alive
You sound so tired
Human-life
Equals mindless lies

Nurture your soul
Remove envy
You won’t grow
Forgive the doubts you had in her
She tried her best but that didn’t make her
Sorry is never enough

***

For dadi

17 hours till they put you in the right hospital bed
Hospital beds
Lack the right meds
Misdiagnosed cus they say we’re acting again
Begums love drama
Cus’ they say we’re stubborn
Miscommunicating till your dark in your death
10 day coma
Seizuring till lent
Ramadan not faraway
What am I gonna do without your pakoras again?

Maybe we’ve all got anger management
Should have said sorry
Before it was too late

Fake dior glasses & gucci bags
If it’s real to you then it’s real to me
Superstars make supermodels

Tum zindigi enjoy karo
Cus you won’t spend it in the grave

I am co-founder of ajeeb studios (@ajeeb_studios), multidisciplinary artist, writer, director, poet, facilitator and DJ aiming to use my platform in the arts to change the social and political discourse framed around representation for Muslim women. I have been working as a Drama & Arts coordinator for Let’s Talk Rochdale, facilitating and producing ‘Let’s Talk Zindabad’ at Contact Theatre (June, 2022). I will be working with the Royal Exchange Theatre preparing for the Den Festival in Rochdale in collaboration with Let’s Talk (August, 2024). In 2023, I collaborated with Contact Theatre in Manchester on a short R&D (Research & Development) called ‘my mum told me not to marry an atheist’ and have developed this at Islington Mill (May, 2024). I am part of Kali Theatre’s 2023/24 DISCOVERY Programme at Leicester Curve, contributing to ‘Hope New Mill’ which will be performed as R&D in March 2024. I am currently developing my short film (TV Pilot) ‘Daytimers,’ which I have written, directed, and produced. I have recently performed as a DJ playing an electic mix of Acid-Arab, Techno, House, Desi-Fusion at Parklife VIP Stage, Viaduct (National Trust) and Crop Radio DialledIn Takeover (June, 2024).
